Keeping the Construction Industry Going

The construction industry has struggled a bit in recent years. This is not because there's not amazing technology out there to make construction easier. There's tons of technology, and it's amazing! Rather, the struggle seems to be that there is a shortage of labor. Many young people are not as interested in working in construction anymore. We hope that we can do our part to change that. In posting on this blog, we hope to reach a wide audience, including young people who may want to work as contractors. There are excellent jobs in the industry, and learning the basics on this blog can set you up for success.

Common Types of Balcony Waterproofing

Balconies are an essential part of many homes and apartments. They provide a fantastic spot for relaxation, fresh air, and panoramic views. However, being exposed to the elements, balconies need protection from water damage, which can compromise their structural integrity and aesthetics. Here's a guide to common types of balcony waterproofing.

1. Liquid Membrane Waterproofing

Liquid membrane waterproofing is a popular choice due to its flexibility and durability. It involves applying a liquid waterproof layer over the balcony surface. Once dry, it forms a rubber-like membrane that seals cracks and prevents water penetration.

This type of waterproofing can withstand temperature changes and UV radiation. The application process is relatively simple, and it dries quickly. However, it requires proper preparation of the surface and professional application to ensure it's evenly spread and fully protective.

2. Sheet Membrane Waterproofing

This kind of waterproofing involves attaching a sheet of waterproof material to the balcony surface. This method provides a high level of protection and is particularly effective for large areas.

The sheets are often made from materials that provide a robust barrier against water. However, the application process can be complex and time-consuming, requiring professional installation to ensure they're correctly applied and sealed.

3. Cementitious Waterproofing

Cementitious waterproofing is a cost-effective and easy-to-apply solution. It involves mixing a waterproofing agent with cement and applying it to the balcony surface. This method creates a rigid, durable waterproof layer that can withstand heavy foot traffic and harsh weather conditions.

However, because cementitious waterproofing isn't very flexible, it may not be the best option for balconies that experience significant temperature fluctuations, as this can lead to cracking.

4. Polyurethane Coating

Polyurethane coating is another efficient waterproofing method. It forms a highly elastic waterproof layer that can expand and contract with temperature changes, making it suitable for balconies exposed to varying weather conditions.

Polyurethane coatings are resistant to abrasion and can withstand heavy foot traffic, but they require professional application and careful maintenance to prevent wear and tear.

5. Tile Waterproofing

Tile waterproofing is a popular choice for balconies with ceramic or porcelain tiles. It involves applying a waterproofing membrane beneath the tiles, which prevents water from seeping through the grout or underneath the tiles.

This method offers excellent waterproofing and aesthetic appeal, but it requires professional installation to ensure the membrane is correctly applied and the tiles are properly laid and sealed.

Protecting your balcony from water damage is crucial for maintaining its longevity and aesthetic appeal. The right waterproofing method for your balcony will depend on various factors, including your balcony's material, exposure to weather conditions, and budget. Consult a professional waterproofing company to help you choose the most suitable solution for your needs. Remember, investing in good balcony waterproofing can save you from costly repairs in the future.
